Creating and Managing Categories
Organising categories can be one of the greatest influences in how easy it is to navigate your site. It can also be one of the hardest things to get right, and there’s many a blog owner who wishes they’d done it differently. You can always reorganise the categories at a later date, but that can be quite a tedious task as you will often need to re-categorise each and every posting that is affected.
One of the best things we use to determine what categories we need is a Website Schematic Flow Chart. We map out our content according to the levels of categories we will need. It certainly helps to visualise what categories you will need when you start your website.
As your website grows, you may find you need to tweak or add to your categories. Here’s how to do that.
Creating Categories
Click on categories from your dashboard menu. The categories link is found under the Posts heading.
To add a category, simply fill in the fields under the heading Add New Category.
Category Name – This is the nice, short name of the category. Try to avoid length descriptions. One or two words are best, and easiest to read on most websites.
Category Slug – This is an advanced option – it’s automatically populated if you don’t put anything in. Until you get to more advanced techniques you can leave this field alone. It describes the permalink path to the category when the permalinks option in WordPress is set. Read the permalinks section of this document to learn more about the subject.
Category Parent – If you’re creating a subcategory, this allows you to define which category is a parent.
Description – Optional, but can be helpful – especially if you have multiple contributors to your site. Explain concisely but clearly what the purpose of the category is.
Once you have filled in all the fields, simply click Add New Category
Another Option
Another quick way to add a category is while you are creating or editing a post. Under the list of all your categories, on the right of your screen you will find a link to add a new category. Simply click the link, choose the category parent and add new category.
Editing Categories
Click on categories from your dashboard menu. The categories link is found under the Posts heading.

Hovering over a category will give you a couple of options to choose from. Edit – allows you to edit the category including changing its parent category, Quick Edit – allows you to change the category name and slug, Delete – allows you to delete the category and View shows you the front-end view of the category and all its posts in a new window.
Click on the Edit link to edit the category. Here you can change the category name, category slug, the category parent and the category description. Changing the category parent means, you can make the category a sub-category of a different category or, by choosing none, you can make it a first level category.
Click Update and you are done
