Formatting text using the text editor

When you create or edit a page or post, WordPress gives you a simple text editor to help you style your text. This text editor looks and works similar to word processing software e.g. wordpad.

By default, you are shown only one line of tools or buttons. To show all the tools that are available to you, the whole kitchen sink, click on the block with little squares on it (it will say show/hide kitchen sink on hover).

Once you have shown the kitchen sink you will have a range of editing tools at your disposal, many of which are familiar or self-explanatory.

Don’t forget, if you get stuck, hovering over the button will give tell you what it does.

Formating Text using Text Styles

WordPress comes with a number of pre-formatted text styles that you can use to format your text. Just highlight the text you wish to assign the style to and then choose your style.

Headings

Headings 1 through to 6 have been given a style. Headings 1 and 2 are used within the theme for site and page titles. Feel free to use headings 3 to 6 for your headings within your content.

Lists

Both ordered (numbered) and unordered (bulleted) lists have been styled for you. It is often advisable to use lists or points in your content as they catch the eye and visitors are inclined to jump to them rather than reading through paragraphs of text.

Feel free to test out the different styles your theme offers, to see how you would best like to use them. Remember what something looks like in the visual editor and how it will look on the page are quite different, unfortunately – make good use of the Preview button before publishing. This is what the above example looked like in our theme.
